Beware of selecting the most inexpensive estimate
We all like to get a good deal. But how motivated should we be when it comes to searching for the least expensive estimate in regard to our vehicle repair? There are few reasons why the cheapest estimate is not always the best option.
Outer appearance is one thing. But structural integrity and safety are another. When comparing estimates, be sure that the structural repairs are being addressed properly to insure a safe repair. Many items that appear as if they can be "banged out" compromise the integrity of the metal and therefore will not react correctly in the event that another collision is sustained.
In many cases, our automobiles are the second largest single purchase that we will make. Therefore, we need to preserve the fit, finish, and function of our investment so that it will perform correctly long after the collision repairs have been completed. Also, with the issue of diminished value upon the sale or return of a vehicle, if a cheaper repair is performed, it will definitely affect the resale or trade in value of a vehicle.
Many facilities will prepare a less expensive estimate in order to secure the repair job. Then, once the owner's authorization is secured and the repairs are started, the facility will come up with a large supplement for damages that didn't appear on the original estimate. Unfortunately, there are certainly instances of discovering hidden damages, but to intentionally leave items off of the estimate so as to gain control of the vehicle, is not an ethical business practice.
